When our drummer comes over to lay down his part, he will use headphones and the tracks to guide him. This ensures everything is held together with a steady tempo plus this method of recording eliminates microphone bleed from one instrument to another. That's not always bad though. This will be The Surf Zombies 3rd CD.

I'm using a crappy digital camera, but I hope the tones of this killer amp come across favorably. Landry is a brand new guitar amp maker based out of St. Louis, Missouri. He's a GREAT guy, awesome player, and has a golden ear for tone! I just bought the second LS100 sold and am proud to share this video of it with everyone! His new amps (www.landryamps.com) are all hand-built by him using some of the finest parts available. I describe this LS100 head as a SUPER versatile Marshall Plexi. It has all of the classic and modded Plexi tones on tap, but also a great master volume, line level effects loop, great sounding spring reverb, EQ controls that actually work, and a SUPER nice "Fender blackface" style clean channel. In this video, I start out on the beautiful clean channel with some of the amp's built-in spring reverb, then I change some knobs on that same channel to get lighter distortion tones. This is an AWESOME feature in my opinion! I then walk through channel 2, first without the "high gain" boost, then with it engaged. I switch the "high gain" boost off and on a time or two at the end. I'm not using the rack effects processor in this video, but the Landry loop works PERFECTLY with it (Rocktron Intellifex.) You can just go into the store and buy whatever amp, right? Yes, it could be that simple. But, without proper information, one could end up making a very costly mistake. So, we will delve into the world of tone and the steps to making a more informed buying decision.

Because that's what you're looking to find - the right tone. Tone is the combination of your guitar, your amp, and your fingers. The amp is crucial because it provides the means for self expression.
This is the first installment of two articles that will try to help you choose an amplifier. I will focus on beginning players today and intermediate players in the next installment. First, what style of music do you play? There aren't as many amp choices as for guitars, but they are more or less designed for specific groups of players and/or genres of music. This doesn't mean one amp won't do most things in the world of tone, but they usually shine in only a few areas. Last, but definitely not least, PRICE! Some of us can go out a buy whatever our hearts desire, but for the majority of us, price plays a major role in the search for tone.

Although I know you want to, as a beginning guitar player, you don't need to go out and buy that massive Mesa or Marshall stack or even a 2 x 12" combo amp. Start with something basic. A small practice amp with an 8", 10", or 12" speaker should be sufficient. Channel switching is very nice to have. Channel switching allows you to go from dirty to clean with push of a button on the front panel or with a switch on the floor. Reverb, as well as chorus, is a nice option to have. (Don't hold your breath for chorus, though.) These features make playing much more fun.

I wouldn't spend more than $300 on an entry-level amp, and that figure should probably end up somewhere betweeen $100 and $200. I don't recommend buying below $100 dollars. I don't think they sound all that good. At the sub-$300 price level, pro tone hasn't entered the building, and tubes are hard to find (there are a few, but we won't go into that here). Decent noise can be had, though. For most tones, the entry level amps of the major manufacturers are great buys. I would stay away from tube amps, because they tend to show more mistakes. This can be very frustrating when just starting out. All that is needed is an amplifier that sounds relatively decent and will keep you playing.

As a beginning guitar player, you don't have to play in the store. Have the sales guy take a particular amplifier through its paces. Listen closely to the amplifier. Is the sound clear? If applicable, how does the reverb sound? Lush and warm or "Boingy"? We want as close to lush and warm as possible. Channel switching? Does it pop when changing the channels? What kind of range do the knobs produce? A large margin of frequency cutting is what we want here, for the purpose of getting as many sounds as possible. Cheaper amps tend to only have passive tone controls, (i.e they only cut frequencies). The more expensive amplifiers can sometimes have active tone controls, (i.e. cutting and boosting of frequencies is possible). The Peavey 5150 II is like this. Remember that the sales dude has most likely been playing with all these amps for 4 hours a day for several years, and he may sound a lot better than you do, but he also knows the amps.

If you do feel up to playing in the shop, we have some terms that you will find labeled as some of the amplifier and taken to define the front. Some of the amplifiers, the higher end of this category can jack / control on the back. On the amplifier, you will find one or two 4.1 "input jacks labeled input. Generally, you will find a volume control, a bass control, a middle control, and a high control. These are pretty explanatory. Sometimes, the volume control will be labeled post gain. On amps with channel switching, a pre gain control is usually present. This controls the amount of dirt or distortion. If you are lucky enough to get an amplifier that has reverb, there will be a control to adjust the amount of "echo" that you hear, from none to full saturation. With amps that have more than this minimum number of controls and channel switching, a separate set of tone controls are usually added for the clean channel, so that you don't have to use the same settings on your clean channel that you use for your distortion channel. With chorus, the controls are rate and depth. Rate is the speed of the effect and depth is the amount of the effect you hear.

For power, ten to thirty watts is all that is really needed. Anything more, and hearing loss, parents, siblings, and neighbors become a problem. If the amp does have channel switching, I strongly recommend purchasing the footswitch that goes with it. You will thank me. Specific manufacturers to look at are Peavey, Fender, Marshall, Randall, and Waller (this is a new manufacturer that puts out some great sounding amplifiers). If you do have the budget to get an effects box along with the amp, I don't recommend getting a distortion pedal. Let the amp do the work. Besides, noise problems will usually pop up, especially with transistor amps.

In closing, choosing a starter amplifier is more about get a decent sound, continue to play like stroking your ego or looking good in front of your friends with the latest and best amplifiers on the market. The tone of your favorite guitarist is unnecessary and may even fool. If you spend a lot of money and not keep up with her, you bought your self wearing a very expensive parking. Remember to buy what you want, and listen to your ears!

Review of the Rivera Knucklehead guitar amplifier

There comes a time in the life of each band, if someone really wants to play somewhere. (Somewhere, the drummer is not the basement, I mean.) There is something about pawn shops. In fact, some people recorded whole albums about them. As a man, I think it's the smell. Seriously. Next time you walk past a pawn shop, walk in and take a big huge sniff. It's the smell of a potential bargain, a possible rip off. Pawn shop hunting is the modern day civilized hunting expedition.

On a recent hunting trip I managed to trap a PRS SE Single Cut Soap bar Model. It's an SE, so it's a Korean model. I had a look online and it lists for about 700 pounds, so it's still a bargain.

Basically, I was looking for a cheap guitar case at the pawn brokers because I'm one case short these days, and as I was leaving I saw it in the window. I came home, asked the better half if I can get guitar number seven and she said ok, because she knows how much I want a PRS, and [suck up mode] because she is the most lovely person in the word [/suck up mode].

I went back up to the pawn broker, and asked for a play. It was awful. Absolutely unplayable. He said he had it in there for a while and that it had been reduced because for some reason he can't sell it. All the problem was is that the bass side of the bridge was WAAAYYY to low. I pulled out a ten cent coin, four turns of the bridge bolt, BINGO, perfect playability.

Yeah, the tone control will likely need replacing, but big whoop. It sounds beautiful, even with the dead strings on it. I even got him to throw in a case for $0. Bargain and a half.

How much I hear you all ask.

$499 Australian Dollars. Go do the math! I can't wait to finish paying this off in the next few weeks and going wild. It just seems to be that every guitar I want is falling right in front of me. I few months ago, I was really wanting an S-S-S Strat. Then I get a phone call from someone I had not seen in two years offering me her partner's guitar that he does not play. It was an S-S-S Strat. $100 later and it was mine. Now I get the PRS I've been wanting for years.

So here are my rules for pawn shop guitaring.

1. Never impulse buy
You see something you like, don't just grab it and run (unless you think you can get away without getting caught). Play the guitar for a while. Put it down and come back in the next few days. See if it still feels the same and has the same appeal as that initial reaction. The last thing that you want to do is to buy a guitar that you loved at the time only to take back to the same pawn shop a few weeks later.

2. Have a goal
This follows on from tip number one. Have a goal as to what type of guitar you are after. By that I mean you should a clear definition of what you want to buy. This will help you avoid the impulse buy, and focus your attention so you don't get distracted by all the shiny things in the shop. Going back to my PRS example, I've been looking for a nice guitar with soap bar style pickups now to round out my collection. I wasn't necessarily after a PRS, but that came as a giant bonus. It was the only guitar that had the features I was after, and as such was the only guitar I picked up and tried. Don't by a guitar that you don't need, unless of course it is something exceptional.

3. Play with the knobs and know how a guitar works
The ones on the guitar you dirty fiends. Turn all the knobs, waggle the lead, and flick all the switches. Make sure they all work, and if not, have a rough idea if you can fix it yourself or how much it may cost you. You don't want to spend $100 on a guitar and then have to do $300 worth of work on it. The PRS has a busted tone pot, and I can most likely fix that myself, and at worse, I no someone who will fix it for a few beers. You also need to know a little about the setup of guitars. The PRS again is a great example. The strings were to low, and after looking down the neck I could tell the issue was just the bridge height. Simple things like that can get you a bargain. This guitar had been ignored my who knows how many people before me because they did not know how to correct that simple problem. A little knowledge is your friend here.

4. Try some different amps
This is very important. The person running the pawn shop will always plug you into a small Fender combo and crank the reverb. I honestly think that those small combos were designed by Fender exclusively for the pawn shop industry because they make every guitar sound great. So try the guitar with that crappy 15W no name amp as well. It will give you a much better idea on the true sound quality.

5. Don't pay for the case
From my experience, the person who pawns off any decent guitar will have had it in a case, and the case will likely be out the back of the shop. Ask about the case, ask if it is included in the price, and if not ask why not. 75% you'll get the case for free, 20% heavily discounted, and the remaining 5% involves you walking out of the store. They want the sale just a bad as you want to buy the guitar so let them chase you.

Gibson was Fender's first major competitor in 1952. Expert guitarist Les Paul helped publicize and design the Gibson guitars, which included his legendary Les Paul models. It was the mass production of Fender and Gibson guitars that lowered the price and made them reachable by teenagers across the country. Now any teenager could envision themselves as being in a musical rebellion.

In the 1960s, many people thought that rock and roll would be a quick fad, but with the Beatles and Beach Boys and other groups of the 1960s, rock and roll dominated the music and became powerfully rooted in the American culture.

It was also in the 1960s that guitarists found new sounds and most guitarists were using distortion and other special effects such as tremolo and reverb.

Distortion and feedback became commonplace with guitarists like Hendrix, Van Halen and Tom Scholz.

Review of the Rivera Knucklehead Guitar Amp

Not surprisingly, Rivera heard from a guy named Paul Rivera. I think it's a little 'surprising that his name is Paul, but that's it.
